Hotspot Monitoring for Palm Oil Plantations

We are providing regular updates from hotspot monitoring efforts where our oil palm plantations are located in South Sumatra and West Kalimantan, Indonesia, starting today. The updates will cover all areas within our boundaries and up to one kilometer away. Updates will be posted daily until the end of the dry season.

Cargill has a strict zero-burning policy. We do not condone burning of land for any means: agricultural, economic or social. The smoke haze from burning severely impacts the health and livelihoods of millions living in our local communities, including our colleagues.

Hotspot update: October 9 – 13 October, 2021

On October 12 and 13, 2021, there was a hotspot detected within the Cargill Tropical Palm concession, in Ketapang, West Kalimantan. We have deployed our team and they discovered that the local community started the fire for land clearing. The fire had stopped when the team did ground verification.

Hotspots were detected around our concession area in Kalimantan Barat. We have verified that they started in the enclaved areas owned by communities. Cargill does not own the enclaved area and the actions taken by local communities on their lands are beyond company’s control. We have deployed our team and at the time of this update, our team has confirmed that the fire has been completely put out.

Cargill has a strict zero-burning policy. We do not condone burning of land for any means: agricultural, economic or social.

On September 23, 2021, a number of hotspots were detected around our concession area in Kalimantan Barat. We have verified that all hotspots started in enclaved areas owned by community. Cargill does not own these enclaved areas and the actions taken by local communities on their lands are beyond company control. We have deployed our fire-fighting team and at the time of this update, our team has confirmed that the fire has been completely put out.

Hotspot update: August 12, 2021

On Thursday, August 12, 2021, three hotspots were detected nearby the Cargill Tropical Palm concession, in Ketapang, West Kalimantan and it was discovered that the hotspots originated from a community enclave area that was cleared for farming. When this update was made, it was confirmed that the fire had stopped.
