On Friday, November 8, at 3.25 pm, one hotspot was detected within our concession under PT Harapan Sawit Lestari in Kalimantan Barat. Subsequently, we have verified that the hotspot started in an enclaved area owned by community. Cargill does not own this enclaved area and we do not have the jurisdiction over the actions of local communities on these lands. We have deployed our fire-fighting team to help fight the fire and our team is standby on location to monitor for further activity. At the time of this update, the fire has been successfully contained.

Subsequently, we have verified that the hotspot started within our plantation. We have deployed our fire-fighting team to fight the fire and our team is standby on location to monitor for further activity. We are still investigating the cause of the fire in our location. At the time of this update, the fire has been successfully contained.

We are investigating the cause of hotspot in our plantation and updates will be forthcoming.

On 24 September, 2019, one of our plantation in West Kalimantan, PT Harapan Sawit Lestari (HSL), and an enclaved area owned by local community were visited by the Chief of West Kalimantan police department, the head of West Kalimantan environment and forestry department, Ketapang Police Chief, Head of provincial plantation service, and Head of the regional disaster mitigation agency. The purpose of the visit was to inspect hotspots occurring in Asam Besar village, Manis Mata sub-district.
During that visit, Cargill demonstrated our ongoing efforts to prevent and fight land and forest fires. Our fire-fighting team demonstrated the readiness and serviceability of our fire-fighting equipment, including extinguishers, fire-engines and high-pressure water pumps. We also showed the organization structure of our certified fire emergency response team and the inspection of our monitoring and control installations such as fire towers and water reservoirs. An area of the PT HSL plantation that sustained fire damage is now cordoned off to secure the area as evidence for investigations that are ongoing. This is a follow-up of our earlier hotspot update on September, 9 and 20.

On Tuesday, September 24, at 3.54 pm, a hotspot detected within our concession under PT Harapan Sawit Lestari in West Kalimantan. Subsequently, we have verified that the actual fire started in an enclaved area owned by community. Cargill does not own this enclaved area and we do not have the jurisdiction over the actions of local communities on these land. We have deployed our fire-fighting team to help fight the fire and at the time of this update, the fire has been completely put out. Our team are stand by on location to monitor this area.

The nearest hotspot was identified more than one kilometer outside our plantation’s boundary of Poliplant Group in West Kalimantan. Our team are stand by on location to monitor this area closely.

Subsequently, we have verified that the actual fire started in an enclaved area owned by community. Cargill does not own these enclaved areas and we do not have the jurisdiction over the actions of local communities on these lands. We have deployed our fire-fighting team to help fight the fire and our team are stand by on location to monitor this area.
Separately, a hotspot was also identified in the vicinity of our concession boundary belonging to PT Hindoli, also in South Sumatra at 6.30 am. We subsequently verified that the hotspot was located less than one kilometer outside of our plantation’s boundary. We have deployed our team to help put out the fire and heavy equipment to suppress the fire. At the time of this update, the fire has been successfully extinguished. Our team is standby on location and we are monitoring this area closely.

On Friday, September 20, at 3.28 pm, four hotspots were identified within our concession under PT Harapan Sawit Lestari in West Kalimantan. We have subsequently verified that one hotspot was located in an enclaved area owned by community and another hotspot was confirmed to be within our concession. We have deployed our fire fighting team on the ground to help contained the fire in both our concession and community’s enclaved area. We have engaged with local authorities on this case and we are investigating the cause of fire within our plantation.
There is no hotspot detected within boundary of our plantation PT Hindoli in South Sumatra and Poliplant Group in West Kalimantan.

On Thursday, September 19, at 3.29 pm, 14 hotspots were detected within our concession under PT Harapan Sawit Lestari in Kalimantan Barat. Ten hotspots were verified in an enclaved area owned by community and four hotspots were identified within our concession area. Cargill does not own these enclaved areas and we do not have the jurisdiction over the actions of local communities on these lands. We have deployed our fire-fighting team to help community to fight the fire and our team are stand by on location to monitor this area. We are investigating the cause of fire within our plantation and have referred the cases to the police.
Cargill has ongoing community programs to raise awareness on the impact of slash-and-burn and have provided training on alternatives to burning for clearing land to community. We have also engaged local authorities to socialize the ‘no burning’ law to the communities.
Separately, two hotspots were identified in the vicinity of concession belonging to Poliplant Group, also in West Kalimantan. We have verified the actual hotspots to be within our plantation’s boundary. Our fire-fighting team has successfully contained the fire at the time of this update. We are monitoring this area for further activity and we have notified the local authorities.
No hotspots have been detected within boundary of our plantation PT Hindoli in South Sumatra. The nearest hotspot was detected to be one kilometer outside of our plantation’s boundary. We have our fire-fighting team stand by on location.

Eight hotspots were verified in an enclaved area owned by community and one hotspot were identified within our concession area. Cargill does not own these enclaved areas and we do not have the jurisdiction over the actions of local communities on these lands. We have deployed our fire-fighting team to help community to fight the fire and our team are stand by on location to monitor this area. We are investigating the cause of fire within our plantation and have referred the cases to the police.

On Tuesday, September 17, at 3.09 pm, four hotspots were detected within our concession under PT Harapan Sawit Lestari in Kalimantan Barat. Two hotspots were verified in enclaved area owned by community and two hotspots were identified within our concession area. Cargill does not own these enclaved areas and we do not have the jurisdiction over the actions of local communities on these lands. We have deployed our fire-fighting team to help fight the fire and our team are stand by on location to monitor this area. We subsequently verified that the actual fire started in an enclaved area owned by the local community. Our team are stand by to contain the fire and we have engaged the local authorities to monitor this area.
Separately, a hotspot was also identified in the vicinity of our concession boundary belonging to Poliplant Group, also in West Kalimantan. The hotspot has been confirmed to be in an enclaved area owned by community. We have deployed our team to put out the fire and we are monitoring this area for further activity.
Three hotspots were detected in the concession of our plantation PT Hindoli in South Sumatra. After verification, the hotspot was confirmed to be less than one kilometer outside our plantation’s boundary.
