Cargill tropical palm produces high-quality, sustainably-produced crude palm oil, palm kernel and palm kernel oil grown on our own plantations and sourced from local Indonesian smallholders.

Our plantations are based in Indonesia – PT Hindoli in South Sumatra, our first investment in Indonesia oil palm plantations made in 1996; PT Harapan Sawit Lestari and PT Indo Sawit Kekal in West Kalimantan, acquired in 2005; and Poliplant Group comprising five contiguous plantations acquired in 2014. Together, our plantations cover around 80,000 hectares of company-owned planted land and employ close to 18,000 people.

Cargill also works with more than 21,000 smallholder farmers in the production of sustainable crude palm oil. Cargill supports efforts to help these smallholder farmers adopt sustainable agricultural practices, improve land use, increase the quality and quantity of their crops, and promote safe and efficient working practices. In 2013, smallholders from our plantation in PT Hindoli earned close to triple the national average of Indonesia’s income.

As a founding member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) formed in 2004, Cargill is an active supporter of sustainable palm oil. PT Hindoli, PT Harapan Sawit Lestari and PT Indo Sawit Kekal are certified by the RSPO. The first mill and estate operations under Poliplant Group received RSPO certification in 2016 and certification for its remaining estates and mills at Poliplant Group is in progress. PT Harapan Sawit Lestari and PT Hindoli are also certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), and PT Hindoli is, additionally, Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certified.

In 2016, five palm oil mills at PT Hindoli and PT Harapan Sawit Lestari were recognized for achievements in environmental management by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry and Ministry of Industry. Cargill’s Tanjung Dalam mill and Paku Juang and River View mills received Blue awards, while its Sungai Lilin mill and Manis Mata mill received Green awards in Indonesia’s Program for Pollution Control, Evaluation and Rating (PROPER)  2016 in the Agroindustry category.

Cargill’s environmental best practices were further lauded by Industry Minister Airlangga Hartato at the Green Industry Awards  2016 on December 20. Hindoli’s Sungai Lilin and Tanjung Dalam mills received the highest award, Level V, for their sustainable production processes.

Both awards are a testament to Cargill’s ongoing pursuit of its global environmental goals – using energy and fresh water more efficiently, reducing greenhouse gases (GHG), and drawing power from renewable energy sources - all of which bring economic, environmental and social benefits to customers, communities and businesses.

*PROPER is an annual program by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to encourage the compliance of companies in environmental management and drive companies that have good environmental performance to adopt cleaner practices. The PROPER assessment system is divided into five categories - Gold, Green, Blue, Red and Black, with the Gold rating being the highest level that a company can achieve.

*The Green Industry Award is an appreciation for industrial companies for their participation in preserving the environment through the responsible use of water, increasing energy efficiency, and the implementation of sustainable production processes. The Level V award is the highest achievement that a company can achieve.
